Klein ISD Tournament March 5-7, 2009

KHS vs. Katy       Non-District Game

Frazier and Taylor go deep to propel Kingwood past Katy 12-9 in exciting rematch.

Kingwood and Katy met up for the second time in a week and when the dust settled, Kingwood stood victorious with a 12-9 win.   Taylor Taska got the starting nod and earned the win with five hard innings of work.  Katy delivered ten hits and posted eight runs (four earned) against Taska.  Junior Jared Pinson came on in relief in the 6th and worked through the 7th holding the Tigers to a single additional run.

The Mustangs opened the game with three runs in the first frame.  Jon Vernon gave the Mustangs their first runner when he laid down a pretty one-out bunt single.  Vernon stole second and then advanced to third on a passed ball.  Geoff Perrott followed with a walk to give Kingwood runners on the corners.  With Brian Frazier at the plate, Alex Sowyrda (running for Perrott) took off for second while Vernon edged off third.  After getting into a run down, Sowyrda made it back to first but Vernon was called out as he attempted to get back to the bag.  Brian Frazier then singled up the middle followed by Taylor Taska who smacked a 3-2 pitch on a line over the left field wall to put Kingwood on top 3-0.  Brett Stilwell added a single down the left field line and then Blake Whitter and Drew Denney loaded the bases with back to back walks.  All three were left on base when Brown hit into an infield groundout to end the side.

Kingwood threatened again to no avail in the 2nd when Cody Perkins led off and was hit by a pitch, Vernon put down a sac bunt and reached on a throwing error, and Frazier worked a walk to load the bases.  Consecutive fly ball outs by Taska and Stilwell ended the frame without any runs crossing home.

The story was much the same in the 3rd when successive walks by Denney, Brown, and Perkins loaded the bases with one out.  Vernon then drove in Denney with a grounder to short and reached on the play when the fielder failed to handle the ball cleanly.  The inning ended on 6-4-3 double play ball hit by Perrott.  Perrott appeared to be safe at first when the throw went high but the umpire called interference on Vernon’s slide into second and awarded Katy the inning ending double play.

In the 4th, Frazier reached on an error to lead off and Taska singled down the left field line to give the Mustangs two on with no outs.  The next three plate appearances resulted in two pop ups and an infield ground out and the side retired with another goose egg on the scoreboard.

Katy put up two in the bottom half of the 1st and added six in the 4th to go up 8-4.  To Kingwood’s credit, they battled back in the 5th and scored six runs of their own to go ahead 10-8.  Brown led off and drove the first pitch he saw into left for a single.  Perkins joined Brown when he was hit by a pitch (second of the night) and then Vernon singled to right to plate Brown.  Perrott followed with a single to right that scored Perkins and then Frazier cleared the bases with a massive blast over left center (fourth HR of season).  After Taska flew out to center, Stilwell worked a walk.  Pinch hitter Jon Freemyer then made his first entry of the season but went down swinging for the Mustangs’ second out.  Denney followed and smacked a double down the right field line to plate Stilwell but then got cut down at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the 6th.  Brown worked a walk to lead off and Perkins followed with a single to center.  Vernon advanced both runners with a sac bunt and then Perrott brought them home when he smashed a hard grounder down the line into the left field corner.

Contributing to the Mustang offense were Brian Frazier (2/4, HR, BB, 3RBI,  RE), Taylor Taska (2/5, HR, 3RBI), Jon Vernon (2/3, 2Sac, 2RE), Geoff Perrott (2/4, BB, 3RBI), Cody Perkins (1/2, BB, 2HbP), Brett Stilwell (1/4, BB), Drew Denney (1/3, Dbl, 2BB, RBI), and Dale Brown (1/2, 2BB).

On defense, short stop Brett Stilwell gets a blue star for taking one in the hole in the 5th and gunning down the runner at the plate.  Drew Denney also gets a blue star for his running “over-the-head” catch deep into the right center gap that ended the game.
