KHS vs.
Kingwood fights back with three runs in the 6th to break tie
and win second game of series 9-6.
Pasadena Memorial came to Kingwood for the second game in the best
of three series of the 2008 Bi-District playoff and found a much different
Mustang team than the one they clobbered just one night before. Senior Michael Oros started for the Mustangs
and after giving up three runs in the top of the 1st, battled back
to earn the win. Oros struck out six and
walked two in his six innings of work.
Scott Moore came on in the 7th with no outs and a runner at first but
quickly and methodically struck out the side to earn the save.
The Mavericks opened the game with three runs
in the top half of the inning, but the Mustang offense responded with two runs
of their own to give Memorial notice that Kingwood was not ready to have their
season come to an end. David Tittle gave
the Mustangs their first base runner when he drew a two-out walk and Geoff
Perrott followed with a single to right that moved Tittle to third. Courtesy runner Dale Brown (for Perrott)
stole second and then Jonathan Freemyer drove in Tittle and Brown with a double
to left.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Kingwood
used a suicide bunt to tie the game 3-3.
Brett Stilwell led off with a single up the middle followed by Cory
Frankum who reached on a walk. Matt
Brown moved both runners up with a nicely placed sac-bunt and then Ryan Grundy
executed the suicide squeeze play to perfection to plate Stilwell.
In the 4th, Kingwood scored three runs to go up
6-3. Taylor Taska
ripped a double down the left field line to lead off the inning and then Stilwell
moved him to third when he followed with a single to left. A wild pitch to Frankum allowed Taska to score and advance Stilwell to second. Seconds later, Stilwell moved 90 feet closer
to home when Memorial’s pitcher let loose with another wild pitch. Frankum walked on five pitches and then stole
second prompting a third wild pitch out of Memorial’s pitcher. Stilwell raced home as the ball careened off
the back stop and Frankum rounded third at full bore. When the catcher’s throw back to the plate
went wide, Frankum continued his charge to home scoring the Mustangs’ third run
of the inning.
In the top of the 5th, the Mavericks used two hits, a
walk, and an error to score three runs and tie the game 6-6. In the bottom half of the inning, Freemyer
stroked a two-out single to left but was unable to advance.
Kingwood held Memorial scoreless in the top of the 6th
and then went back up on top for good when they used three hits to score three
runs in their half of the inning.
Frankum doubled down the left field line and then pinch hitter Blake Whitter singled to right.
Ryan Grundy followed and laid down his second perfect squeeze bunt of
the night, this time scoring Frankum, and beating the throw out for a RBI
single. After Memorial caught Whitter leaning off second for the second out, Jordan Raney
reached when he was hit by a pitch.
Raney & Grundy advanced on a double steal and then Tittle smashed a
double down the left field line to plate both runners.
After giving up a bloop
single to open the 7th, Oros handed the ball over to Scott
Moore.
Contributing to the Mustang offense were Cory
Frankum (1/1, Dbl, 2BB, SB), Jon Freemyer (2/3, 2 RBI), Brett Stilwell (2/3,
SB), Ryan Grundy (1/3, Sac, 2RBI), David Tittle (1/3, Dbl, BB, 2RBI), Taylor Taska (1/3, Dbl), Geoff Perrott (1/4), Blake Whitter (1/1).
