KHS vs. Pasadena Memorial Bi-District Playoff Game 1

Memorial’s four runs in the 1st enough to beat Mustangs.

Kingwood traveled to Pasadena Memorial for game one in the best of three series of the Bi-District Playoff and took one square on the chin as the Mavericks pounded out 13 hits to win convincingly 11-1.  Eric Stover started on the mound for the Mustangs and put the first two batters down in order.  After that it was all Memorial as the Mavericks scored four in the 1st followed by six in the 2nd to go up 10-1.  The Mavericks added one more run in the 3rd to finish out the scoring in the run-rule shortened contest.  Stover worked through three innings and then Garrett Doyle took over in relief.  Doyle struck out two of the three batters he faced in the 4th and final inning.

In the top of the 1st, the Mustangs put the first run on the board when Geoff Perrott smashed a solo shot over the wall in left center.  The Mustangs’ early momentum was short lived as the Mavericks answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning and then held the Mustangs scoreless for the remainder of the game.

With one out in the 2nd, Ryan Grundy beat out an infield single and Brett Stilwell followed with single up the middle.  Matt Brown then loaded the bases on a four pitch walk to bring Jordan Rainey to the plate.  Rainey gave the Mustangs hope when he stroked one deep to right but the fielder ran it down to end the side and the only serious threat the Mustangs would mount.

In the 3rd, David Tittle led off with a double to left center but was eliminated on a 1-6 play when Perrott hit one back to the pitcher.  Dale Brown came in as a courtesy runner for Perrott and was left stranded when the next two batters went down in order.  In the 4th, Cory Frankum drove a two-out single up the middle and Matt Brown joined him on the base paths when he worked another walk.  A groundout ended the inning with both runners aboard.  Kingwood went down in order in the 5th, and the game ended by run-rule.

Contributing to the Mustang offense were Geoff Perrott (1/3, HR, RBI), David Tittle (1/3, Dbl), Ryan Grundy (1/2), Brett Stilwell (1/2), Cory Frankum (1/2).
