KHS vs. humble             District 21-5A Game

Kingwood comes out swinging getting five runs on five hits in bottom of 1st inning on way to 10-5 win over rival Humble.

In a game that often sets the tone for each team’s season, Kingwood hosted long time rival Humble on Friday evening in their first meeting of the 2008 season and cruised to a 10-5 victory.  Senior Michael Oros started on the hill for the Mustangs and went four innings to earn the win.  Although Oros struggled with his command, he recorded two strike outs in each of the final three innings he pitched.  Junior Taylor Taska came on in relief in the top of the 5th and pitched two scoreless/hitless innings.  Taska faced the minimum six batters and struck out three.  Senior Austin Evitts took over for the final inning and looked sharp as he struck out two of the four batters he faced and held Humble to another goose egg on the scoreboard.

Kingwood jumped all over Humble in the 1st inning scoring five runs on five hits.  Jordan Raney opened the game with a single to right, but his time on the bases was short lived as he got tagged out after getting caught in a pickle.  Cody Perkins followed with a walk and advanced to 2nd on David Tittle’s ground out.  Geoff Perrott then brought Perkins home with a slashing single to left center and advanced to second on the throw home.  Conor McGinnis plated Dale Brown, running for Perrott, with an RBI single to left and then raced home to score Kingwood’s fourth run of the inning on Cory Frankum’s scorching double down the left field line.  Frankum added the final run of the inning when Bret Stilwell’s grounder to short was mishandled and Frankum came home on the throw to first.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Perkins led off and smacked what appeared to be a sure hit to left but the Humble fielder snagged the ball with a diving catch to send Perkins back to the dugout.  Tittle then worked a walk and trotted home two pitches later courtesy of Perrott who blasted a homer over the left center wall for his first round tripper of the season.  Jonathan Freemyer followed and gave Kingwood another scoring opportunity when he worked a walk and then stole second.  Freemyer's work paid off as he came home when Frankum’s routine fly to center was dropped by the fielder.

Kingwood added another run in the 3rd when Matt Brown led off with solo shot deep over the wall in left.  In the 4th, the Freemyer Frankum combo teamed up again to give Kingwood a 10-5 lead.  Freemyer led off with a sizzling double down the left field line, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, and then scored on Frankum’s sac fly to left.

In the 5th, Matt Brown led off with a double to right center and Tittle joined him on the base paths when he drew a walk, but both were left stranded.  In the 6th, Frankum and Stilwell hit back to back two-out singles but were left standing at second and third when the side retired.

Contributing to the Mustang offense were Matt Brown (2/3, HR, Dbl, HbP, RBI), Jonathon Freemyer (2/3, 2Dbl, BB, RBI, SB), Cory Frankum (2/3, Dbl, Sac, 2RBI, RE), Geoff Perrott (2/4, HR, 3RBI), Conor McGinnis (1/3, RBI), Brett Stilwell (1/4, RE).
