Kingwood/Atascocita Tournament February 21-23, 2008

KHS vs. Archbishop Shaw (LA)       Non-District Game

Raney goes 3 for 4 but Kingwood fails to overcome early Archbishop Shaw lead and falls 8-6.

The Archbishop Shaw Eagles from Marrero, Louisiana led 8-4 after three innings and held on to win 8-6 handing Kingwood its first loss of the season and first loss of the tournament.  Junior Garrett Doyle started on the mound for the Mustangs and pitched into the 3rd inning before giving way to fellow junior Taylor Taska who completed the game.  After giving up a single that allowed two inherited runners to come home, Taska held the Eagles scoreless over the last three innings, striking out four of the final nine batters he faced.

The Mustangs got on the board in the 2nd inning when Geoff Perrott led off with a single followed by Connor McGinnis whose two run shot over the left field fence gave him his second round tripper in as many days.  Kingwood scored two more runs in the 3rd inning.  Jordan Raney led off with a single to center but was eliminated at second when Cory Frankum hit into a fielder’s choice.  Perrott brought Frankum home with his second hit of the night, a single to center.  Matt Brown came in as a courtesy runner for Perrott and quickly advanced to third on a passed ball and a stolen base.  McGinnis followed with a walk and then stole second with Scott Moore at the plate.  Brown scored when the Eagle’s third baseman failed to field Moore’s grounder cleanly.

Kingwood went scoreless in innings 4, 5, and 6 and their two-run rally in the 7th came up short.  Dale Brown led off with a walk and advanced to third on Raney’s third hit of the night, a hard double to right field.  Frankum followed and plated Brown with a sacrifice fly to center.  Raney advanced to third on the play and came home for the Mustang’s final run on David Tittle’s ground out to first.

Contributing to the Mustang offense were Jordan Raney (3/4, Dbl), Geoff Perrott (2/4, RBI), Connor McGinnis (1/2, HR, 2RBI, BB, SB), Ryan Grundy (1/3).
