Kingwood/Atascocita Tournament February 21-23, 2008

KHS vs. Angleton                    Non-District Game

Stover pitches strong - McGinnis leads sluggish offense with 2 hits as Mustangs scrap out a 2-1 win over Angleton Wildcats.

Kingwood won its third consecutive game of the tournament, defeating Angleton by the score of 2-1.  Senior Eric Stover earned the win, going the distance for the Mustangs in a very solid performance allowing just one run on 3 scattered hits.  Stover faced just one batter over the minimum for the last three innings of the game.

Although the Mustang offense put three runners on in the 1st when Cody Perkins, Geoff Perrott, and Conor McGinnis all were hit by pitches, the Angleton defense escaped without damage as Kingwood was not able to plate any of the runners.  In the 2nd inning, Brett Stilwell led off with a double to center.  Dale Brown followed with a nicely placed bunt that the fielder mishandled resulting in Stilwell advancing to third and Brown being safe at first.  Jordan Raney reached on an error and Stilwell scored on the play for the Mustangs’ lone run of the inning.

David Tittle led off the 3rd and reached on an error.  Tittle moved to second on the play and advanced to third on Conor McGinnis’ single to left.  Both runners were left stranded as Kingwood’s next two batters hit into outs.

Angleton tied the game in the top of the 4th with a solo home run and when Kingwood failed to answer, the score stood at 1-1 going into the 5th.  The Wildcats’ led off the 5th with a single but the runner was left stranded when Stover put down the next three batters in order.  In the bottom half of the inning, McGinnis knocked in the winning run with a well hit drive to right that drove in Geoff Perrott who reached base after working a walk.

Dale Brown singled to open the 6th, and Raney drew a walk, but the Mustangs were not able to push any insurance runs across.

Contributing to the Mustang offense were Conor McGinnis (2/2, RBI, HbP), Dale Brown (1/1, BB, Sac/RE), Brett Stilwell (1/3, Dbl).
