District Game

Baytown Sterling @ Kingwood

“Mustangs fall to Baytown Sterling

With an opportunity to tie for first place in District 22-5A half way through district play Tuesday night, the Mustangs could not come up with a timely hit or make the routine play in the field when necessary and fell to Baytown Sterling by the score of 9 to 2 at Andy Wells Field.

Sterling started the scoring in the first inning with one run on only one hit and added five more runs in the second behind two Mustangs errors and a grand slam homerun by Sterling standout Chase Dempsay.

The Mustangs only scoring came with single runs in the first and second innings. Jordan Raney and Jordan Brewster led off the bottom of the first with back to back walks and David Tittle singled to load the bases. Brad Evans than walked to drive in the first Mustang run, but the inning stalled after a strikeout and a failed attempt to steal home.

The Mustangs scored again in the second inning without the benefit of a hit when Designated Hitter Geoff Perrott reached first after a strikeout and passed ball and later scored after two wild pitches and another passed ball. That was as close as the Mustangs would come as they could not take advantage of the wildness of Sterling starting pitcher Hunter Cervenka who somehow managed to work out of trouble. Cervenka only gave up one hit in his 3 1/3 innings of work, but issued seven walks and four wild pitches. Kingwood stranded eight base runners in the first four innings.

The Mustangs relief pitching led by Michael Oros, Corey Grillet and Clint Stover kept Kingwood in the game as they combined to keep Sterling scoreless from the third through the sixth inning without giving up a base hit before they added three more runs in the seventh on two homeruns.

Kingwood is now 4-3 in district play and starts the second half of 22-5A play Thursday night at Baytown Lee.
