The Kingwood Mustangs opened the 2006 State 5A Playoffs Friday with
a double-header at the Jersey Village HS field after a rain out on Thursday
evening. On the bump for the Mustangs was RHP Mike Ojala (6-3). Bellaire
countered with LHP Gould. In the top half of the first inning, Bellaire was
able to score one run on 3 errors by the Mustangs.
Ojala avoided further damage by
striking out the Bellaire DH with runners at second and third. Gould held the
Mustangs scoreless through three innings while Bellaire added one more run in
the third inning on one hit and another Mustang error to lead 2-0. Bellaire's
control of the game changed dramatically in the fourth inning when Kingwood
erupted for three runs on 2 hits and 3 base on balls to take
the lead 3-2. Tittle led off the fourth inning
with a walk followed by a single by Simmons. Ojala grounded out moving both
runners into scoring position. Pierce reached base on a 4 pitch walk to load
the bases.
Designated hitter, Edwards
singled up the middle to score Tittle and Simmons.
Edwards moved to second on a throwing error by the Bellaire centerfielder.
Pierce scored from third on a wild pitch to give Kingwood the lead (3-2). Ojala
settled in after the first inning and held Bellaire to 2 runs through the sixth
inning. The Mustangs extended their lead to 4-2 scoring one run in the fifth
inning on a Brewster walk, Tittle sacrifice bunt and
a Simmons' base hit. Ojala reached on a fielder's choice driving in Brewster,
while Simmons was forced out at second base. The Mustang inning ended when a
runner for Ojala was thrown out on an attempted steal at second base. The
Mustangs kept the pressure on Bellaire in the sixth inning with a leadoff
double by Pierce, a walk by McDonough, hit batsman, Oliver, to load the bases.
Johnson, who had replaced Gould,
in the fourth inning walked Brewster
forcing Pierce home to extend
Kingwood's lead to 5-2. Ojala started
the seventh inning by walking thehis first two batters. After 112 pitches, Ojala was
relieved by Touchton. The Kingwood closer faced only
3 batters allowing one
hit and one run. A double play and a tap back to the mound for
an easy put-out sealed the victory for the Mustangs.
