The final District 22-5A game between Kingwood and Baytown Ross Sterling was a chance for Kingwood to secure a playoff berth in the 2006 State Baseball Playoffs and a chance for Sterling to claim first place in District play. On the mound for Kingwood was senior RHP Ryan Torres (3-0) verses LHP Fuqua, who had been the winning pitcher in the game played at Kingwood earlier in District play. Kingwood threatened in the first inning when Brewster walked and was moved to second by Tittle on a ground out. Simmons singled and Brewster was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second. Ojala hit a deep fly to center to end the inning. Torres came to the mound with fire in his eye and allowed only one hit in the first 3 innings. That lone runner was thrown out by McDonough on an attempted steal at second base. The Mustangs opened up the scoring in the third inning with Brewster's single and a passed ball to Tittle which put him at second. Tittle reached base on an infield error and Brewster moved to third. After a fly out, Ojala hit a ground ball to the shortstop. The ball was thrown in the dirt at first base, which allowed Brewster to score from third and Tittle to race home from second on the errant throw. Pierce's fly ball to left field ended the inning with the Mustangs leading 2-0. In the Sterling fourth inning, a base on balls and a home run tied the score 2-2. Torres continued to be locked in after the home run and retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced. In the sixth inning, the Mustangs exploded. Ojala led off the inning with a single and Pierce walked. Edwards singled to load the bases. Cratty's fly to left field was dropped which allowed Ojala to score from third on an errant throw from left field and Stover scored from second when an errant throw to third by the catcher trying to get Stover advancing on the play. With two runners on base, Oliver singled to load the bases. Fuqua was relieved by Marshall after 5 1/3 IP. Marshall walked Brewster to score Edwards and walked Tittle to score Cratty. Simmons singled to drive in Oliver. Ojala, on a 5-3 groundout, scored Brewster from third to make the score 8-2 Kingwood. Marshall struck out the final Kingwood batter to end the inning. Torres struck out the side in the Sterling half of the seventh inning to seal the victory and a playoff berth for the Kingwood Mustangs. Kingwood will play the Bellaire Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs as the Mustangs begin their march back to Round Rock.
