April 11, 2006
After each winning a game in their two previous meetings of the
season, Kingwood and Humble squared off for the rubber match and Humble came
away with a 4-1 win. Kingwood’s District
record now stands at 7-2 and their overall record at 16-6. Significantly, this district loss gives
Humble the edge over Kingwood in head to head competition should the teams end
the season with like records. Currently,
Humble’s only district loss was to Kingwood.
In their last game against Humble, the Mustangs rallied in their
last at bat for a 4-3 victory. There
would be no such rally in this game.
Simply put, Humble hit the ball and Kingwood did not. Humble’s pitcher
went the distance allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 11 (5
of them looking) against the 24 batters he faced. Kingwood had only four base runners the
entire game. The first one was thrown
out at third when he tried to stretch a double into a triple, the second and
third runners were stranded at first, and the fourth scored Kingwood’s only
run.
Dalton Steen pitched the entire game for the Mustangs giving up 4
runs on 8 hits, 1 walk, and 2 hit by pitch while striking out 1 against the 33
batters he faced. Defensively, the
Mustangs committed 3 errors.
Offensively, Matt Irwin went 2-3, Austin Cornay
went 1-3, and Stanley Churchwell worked a walk.
In the top of the 1st, Steen retired Humble in order.
For Kingwood, Irwin led off with a deep drive to center that
ricocheted off the fielder’s glove prompting Irwin to be motioned on to 3rd
where he was tagged for the first out.
Floyd then hit into a force out at first followed by Churchwell who
struck out to end the inning. At the end
of one, the score was 0-0.
In the 2nd, Steen retired the first two batters but then
Humble took advantage of a single, a walk, and two hit batters to score a
single run.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Scott Moore led off with a
strike out followed by Johnny Freemyer who popped out to first. Cornay then beat
out an infield single but was left stranded when AJ Paradowski
hit into a force out at first. At the
end of two, Humble led 1-0.
In the top of the 3rd, Humble put two runners on but
failed to score. The first runner was
thrown out trying to stretch a double into a triple and the second one was left
stranded at 1st.
Kingwood had 1 hit and 3 strikeouts in the bottom of the 3rd. Steen and Dale Brown led off with strikeouts
followed by Irwin who hit a single to right.
Irwin was left stranded when Alan Floyd struck out to end the
inning. At the end of three, Humble led
1-0.
Humble scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th on 3 singles
and an error.
In the bottom of the 4th, Kingwood went down in
order. Churchwell hit into a force out
at first followed by Moore who struck out.
Freemyer then popped out to the pitcher for the 3rd out. At the end of four, Humble led 3-0.
In the 5th, Humble’s lead off
batter walked, stole 2nd and 3rd, and then came home on a sac-fly
for Humble’s lone run of the inning. Another batter reached on a walk but
Churchwell threw him out on an attempted steal to 2nd to end the
side.
In the bottom of the 5th, Kingwood again went down in
order. Cornay
led off with a strike out followed by Paradowski who
hit into a force out a first. Steen then
struck out to end the inning. At the end
of five, Humble led 4-0.
In the 6th, Humble put one runner on with a double to
left but he was left stranded when the side retired.
In the bottom of the 6th, Kingwood went down in order
for the third time. Taylor Ross led off
and hit into a force out at first followed by Irwin and Floyd who both struck
out. At the end of six, Humble continued
to lead 4-0.
In the top of the 7th, Humble failed to take advantage
of two singles and the side was retired with no runs scored.
Churchwell led off for Kingwood in the bottom of the inning and
reached on a walk. Churchwell then moved
to 2nd when
