Kingwood squared off against visiting Baytown Lee in a district match up that ended after four when the Mustangs run ruled the Ganders with a 14-2 win. Kingwood got four runs in the first inning and finished out the game on cruise control while sending 13 batters to the plate in an eight run 4^th inning before the game was called. Kingwood’s victory over the Ganders gives Kingwood a 3-0 record in district play and a 13-4 record overall.

Alex Sowyrda pitched the entire game for the Mustangs allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 4 and walking none against the 16 batters he faced.

Offensive leaders for Kingwood included Scott Moore (2-2 and an RBI), Alan Floyd (2-3, an RBI, and a double) Stanley Churchwell (1-3, an RBI, and a triple), Garret Doyle (1-2 and an RBI), Matt Richardson (1-1 and an RBI), AJ Paradowski (1-1 and an RBI), Joel Rinehart (1-1 and a sac bunt), Chandler Mann (1-1 and an RBI), Nick Duby (a BB RBI), Johnny Freemyer (0-2 and an RBI), Dale Brown (0-2 and an RBI), Chase Lofgren (0-1 and an RBI), Alex Sowyrda (1-1), and Zack McLellan (1-1). Special mention goes to Kyle Giles who scored 3 runs as a pinch runner in this game and has contributed to the team’s overall success as a pinch runner throughout the season.

Sowyrda retired Baytown Lee in order with six pitches in the top of the 1^st.

In the bottom of the inning, John Vernon led off and went down swinging for the first out. Floyd followed and reached on a single to center. Floyd stole 2^nd and then came home on Churchwell’s stand up triple to right. Freemyer came up next and reached on a fielder’s choice on a play where the shortstop fielded Freemyer’s grounder but instead of going to 1^st, threw to home in a too late attempt to stop Giles (pinch runner for Churchwell) from crossing home while Freemyer hustled to 2^nd on the throw. Austin Cornay then smacked a line drive that was snagged by the 1^st baseman for the 2^nd out. Moore followed and knocked a single up the middle that sent Freemyer on his way to home. The Gander’s center fielder had a good throw to the plate but the catcher chose to ignore a late arriving Freemyer and simply watched as Moore made his way to 2^nd. Rinehart then sent another shot up the middle to advance Moore to 3^rd. Rinehart then stole 2^nd while Sowyrda worked a walk to load the bases for Brown. Moore came home and Rinehart and Sowyrda advanced a base on a passed ball before Brown hit into a force out to end the side. At the end of one, Kingwood was up 4-0.

Sowyrda struck out 2 in the top of the 2^nd en route to retiring Baytown Lee in order.

In the bottom of the 2^nd, Kingwood put two base runners on but could not push a run across. Vernon led off and put down a drag bunt but was called out in a bang bang play. Floyd followed and hit a double off the left center wall. Churchwell batted next and reached on an error with both runners advancing on the bad throw to first. Freemyer then hit a drive back to the pitcher for the 2^nd out and Doyle ended the inning when he hit into a force out at first. At the end of two, Kingwood’s lead remained at 4-0.

Sowyrda and company again put the Ganders down in order in the third.

Kingwood added two runs in the bottom of the 3^rd. Moore led off with a single to left and moved to 2^nd on Rinehart’s sac bunt. Sowyrda followed with a single to right that moved Moore to 3^rd. Moore then waltzed home on the play when the right fielder decided to throw the ball safely to the infield. Matt Irwin came in to pinch run for Sowyrda and quickly stole to 3^rd. Irwin came home when Brown hit into an out at first. Vernon followed and reached on an error. Vernon stole 2^nd but was stranded when Floyd hit into a force out at 1^st for the third out. At the end of three, Kingwood had increased their lead to 6-0.

Baytown Lee scored 2 runs in the top of the 4^th when they started off the inning with three straight hits. Sowyrda then retired the next three batters in order to end the side.

Kingwood batted through 13 and scored 8 runs in the bottom of the 4^th before the game was called by run rule. Churchwell led off and reached on an error when his deep shot to center popped out of the fielder’s glove. Richardson followed and brought Giles (pinch runner for Churchwell) home with an RBI single to right. Doyle then smacked a single to right center to bring up Lofgren who it into a fielder’s choice to eliminate Doyle at 2^nd. Lofgren stole 2^nd while Brent Heppler worked a walk to load the bases. Duby followed and earned an RBI when he battled to a base on balls. Paradowski then smacked a single to left to bring in Heppler. Drew Denney batted next and went down swinging to bring up Mann who brought home Paradowski with an RBI single. McLellan followed with a single and then Richardson loaded the bases again when he worked a walk. Doyle came up next and was hit by a pitch to plate Mann and then Lofgren walked to bring in Giles (pinch runner for McLellan). The game was called at this point. Final score: Kingwood 14, Baytown Lee 2.
