Kingwood opened up its district campaign against Westbrook and used
a four run 2nd inning to go up 6-0 and seal a 7-5 win. Westbrook fought back scoring 5 runs in its
last two at bats but Kingwood was able to hold on for the victory.
Dalton Steen started on the mound for the Mustangs facing 16
batters over 4 innings. Steen held
Westbrook scoreless while allowing 1 hit, striking out 2, and walking 4. Ryan Duckworth started the 5th but
a shrinking strike zone, an error, and control problems forced Duckworth to
give way to Alex Sowryda who came on with 2 outs and
the bases loaded. Duckworth faced 6
batters allowing two runs on no hits while striking out 1 and walking
three. Sowryda
went the last 1 ⅓ innings to conclude
the game allowing three runs on 3 hits while striking out 1 and walking 2
against the 9 batters he faced.
Offensive leaders for the Mustangs included Alan Floyd (2-3 and 1
RBI), Johnny Freemyer (1-1 and 2 RBI’s), and Austen Cornay
(1-1 and 2 RBI’s). Mustangs that
contributed hits included Dale Brown (1-1) and Stanley
Churchwell (1-4).
Steen and company put Westbrook down in order in the top of the 1st.
For Kingwood, Matt Irwin led off and reached on a walk. Floyd joined him with a hit by pitch and with
Churchwell at the plate both runners advanced on a double steal. Churchwell then hit into a force out and the
runners were not able to advance on the play.
Freemyer followed and went to 1st on a ball four passed ball
that allowed a hustling Irwin to score.
With Cornay at the plate, Freemyer moved to 2nd
on a catcher’s indifference. Cornay then lifted a sac fly to right that scored
Floyd.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Steen led off and struck out
for the first out. Brown followed and
was put on with a hit by pitch. Irwin
tried to move Brown over but his attempted bunt was caught for the second out
to bring up Floyd. With Floyd at the
plate, Brown moved to 2nd on a passed ball and to 3rd on
a wild pitch. Floyd then smacked a
double to bring home Brown. Churchwell
followed and moved Floyd to 3rd with a single to left. Freemyer came up next and hit a scorcher down
the 3rd base line to plate both Floyd and Churchwell. Cornay then brought
Freemyer home with an RBI single.
Westbrook’s first two batters went down in order to start the 3rd. The third batter reached on a walk but was
thrown out by Churchwell on an attempted steal to 2nd to end the
side.
AJ Paradowski led off for Kingwood in the
bottom of the 3rd with a deep shot to left that just didn’t have
enough legs and was caught for the first out.
Steen then reached on a walk bringing Brown to the plate. Brown knocked a hit and run single that moved
Brent Heppler (pinch runner for Steen) to 2nd. With Irwin at the plate, Heppler
and Brown advanced on a double steal.
Irwin then went down swinging and Floyd followed with a pop up to short
to end the inning. At the end of three,
Kingwood led 6-0.
In the 4th, Westbrook was not able to capitalize on a
couple of walks and failed to score for the fourth straight inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, Churchwell led off and reached
on an error. Matt Richardson followed
and popped out to 2nd. Taylor
Ross batted next and also reached on an error.
Chase Lofgren then hit a fly to right that was caught for the second out
to bring up Paradowski. After a double steal that put Giles (pinch
runner for Churchwell) at 3rd and Ross at 2nd, Paradowski lifted one to right that was run down for the
third out. At the end of four, the score
remained Kingwood 6 and Westbrook 0.
Westbrook scored 2 in the 5th. One run was scored on an error and the other
run came in via a bases loaded walk.
Duckworth led off for Kingwood in the bottom of the 5th
and flew out to right for the first out.
Garret Doyle followed and worked a walk.
John Vernon then sent a fly to center that was run down for the 2nd
out to bring up Floyd. Floyd continued
his hot hitting with a single to center that moved Doyle to 2nd. Churchwell batted next and reached when the
shortstop overthrew 1st.
Doyle scored and Floyd and Churchwell moved up a base on the error.
Encouraged by their effort in the 5th, Westbrook struck
again in the 6th and scored three more runs before Kingwood shut
them down to end the game. Final score:
Kingwood 7, Westbrook 5.
