Kingwood faced Humble’s White team for the championship of the Consolation bracket and won convincingly 8-1 behind solid defense and a commendable pitching performance by Scott Moore to improve their overall record to 6-2.  Offensively, both teams started out sluggish and after three innings the score stood tied at 0-0.  In the 4th, Kingwood exploded for five runs on five hits and then cruised to victory scoring three more runs over the next two innings against Humble’s sole run in the bottom of the 4th.

Moore pitched the entire seven inning game for the Mustangs.  Facing 26 batters, Moore allowed just one run on two hits while striking out 5 and walking 2.

Offensive leaders for the Mustangs included Taylor Ross (1-3 and 3 RBI’s), John Vernon (1-1 and 1 RBI), Matt Richardson (1-4 and 1 RBI), Austin Cornay (1-3 and 1 RBI), Alan Floyd (1-2), Johnny Freemyer (1-3), Dale Brown (1-2), Joel Rinehart (1-2), and AJ Paradowski (1-2).

Brown became Kingwood’s first base runner of the game when he led off the 3rd with a single to right.  McLellan moved Brown over to second with a sac bunt but the next two batters flied out to end the side.

In the 4th, Floyd led off with a single to center and moved to second on Freemyer’s single to right.  The next batter flied out and then Richardson brought Floyd home with a single to right.  Cornay followed with his own RBI single to center to score Freemyer.  Brown batted next and reached on a fielder’s choice giving Kingwood runners on the corners.  McLellan then loaded the bases for Ross when he was hit by a pitch.  Ross watched one pitch go by and then hammered a triple over the outstretched arm of Humble’s center fielder to score Cornay, Brown, and Kyle Giles (pinch runner for McLellan).  Irwin came up next but his drive to short was caught for the third out.

In the bottom of the 4th, Humble took advantage of an error to push a lone run across.  At the end of four, Kingwood led 5-1.

Floyd led off the 5th and went to first on a hit by pitch.  The next batter flied out for the first out bringing up Brian Frazier.  While Frazier worked a walk, Floyd went to second on a passed ball giving Kingwood runners at first and second.  Richardson then hit into a fielder’s choice to eliminate Frazier at second.  With Cornay at the plate, Richardson stole second and Floyd barreled home on the play scoring when he knocked the catcher’s glove off his hand and the ball flew to the screen.  The inning ended with the shortstop snagging Cornay’s line drive for the third out.

In the bottom of the 5th, Humble’s lead off batter reached on a single but the next three batters went down in order to end the inning.  At the end of five, Kingwood led 6-1.

In the top of the 6th, Rinehart led off and reached on an error.  Paradowski batted next and stroked a single to left center moving Rinehart to 3rd.  Kingwood’s next batter flied out bringing up Vernon who smacked an RBI single to right on the first pitch to score Rinehart and move Paradowski to third.  Paradowski then stole home for Kingwood’s final run as the next two batters struck out.

Moore struck out two while putting Humble down in order in the bottom of the 6th.  At the end of six, Kingwood was up 8-1.

In the 7th, Dalton Steen led off with a deep drive to right that was caught for the first out.  The next batter also flied out bringing up Garret Doyle who reached on a hit by pitch.  Rinehart followed and moved Doyle to second with a single to right.  Both Doyle and Rinehart were left stranded when Paradowski’s stroke to right was run down by Humble’s fielder for the third out.

Humble put one runner on in the bottom of the 7th but could not move him past first before the game ended.  Final score: Kingwood 8, Humble 1.
