Kingwood Mustangs Champions 2004

Pete Runnels Texas Shootout

Coming off their intense win over Tomball in the Saturday night extra inning contest at Minute Maid Park and their workmanlike 8-2 win at Klein last Tuesday, the Kingwood Mustangs went to Lufkin this weekend to play team oriented, confident David Denny baseball - good pitching, solid defense, & aggressive hitting and base running.

During the four games in Lufkin, Kingwood gave up two runs on 6 hits in 23 innings of play behind starting pitchers: Seniors Daniel Edwards & Zach Tumlinson, Junior Blake Hancock, and Sophomore Ryan Torres.  Outstanding relief performances were recorded by Seniors Jimmy Jordan & Jonathan Beaty, and Juniors A.J. Pendleton & Kyle Denny.

Defensively, the Mustangs made no errors in four games.  The infield of Gossett, Whittleman, Fountain, and Wood functioned smoothly with good interchangeable out field play from Denny, Negron, Savarino, Pendleton, McCormick, and Simmons.

Senior catcher Andrew Brooks and Junior catcher John Seitz continue to handle the Mustang pitchers well.

Offensively at Lufkin every spot in the lineup was productive as Denny utilized the entire roster to maximize the performance of his Mustangs.  Kingwood, a team that began to gel in last weeks Minute Maid Classic, came home Saturday night with their second consecutive Pete Runnels Texas Shootout Championship ready to begin 22-5A District play.
