Minute Maid High School Classic

Kingwood Versus Katy

On Friday, March 5, 2004, Kingwood and Katy squared off in game two of the Minute Maid High School Invitational.

Kingwood got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning as centerfielder Kenneth Negron laced a double into the left field corner with one out.  The next batter, shortstop Johnny Whittleman, singled Negron in to put the Mustangs on top 1-0.  That lead would hold until the bottom of the 2nd inning when Katy got a base hit, a stolen base, and another single together to knot the score 1-1.  The contest would stay tied until the bottom of the 5th inning when Katy scored three runs on a hit batter, a walk, and two singles.

Kingwood catcher, Andrew Brooks, ended the inning by throwing out the Katy centerfielder trying to steal.  The game ended with Katy on top 4-1 as Kingwood could not capitalize on base runners in the 5th and 6th innings.

Senior Zach Tumlinson got the start for the Mustangs and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up five hits and four runs.  Senior Jimmy Jordan came on in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings giving up no earned runs on one hit.

Offensively, Kingwood was lead by Negron 1-3 double – 1 run scored and Whittleman

1-2, 1 RBI and 1 walk.
