Beaumont Westbrook Versus Kingwood

Game 10 District 22-5A

The Kingwood defense came to play Tuesday night, April 13, 2004, supporting Senior right-hander Daniel Edwards to his 5th district win and 6th victory overall.  Edwards went five innings while giving up 3 runs on 7 hits with 3 strikeouts.  Senior right-hander Jimmy Jordan came on to pitch the 6th inning with excellent results and Senior left-hander Zack Tumlinson closed the game in the top of the 7th inning to record the save as the Mustangs defeated the Bruins 6-3 for their 16th straight victory.

In the first inning Kingwood turned a 6-4-3 double play to end a Beaumont scoring threat with Junior shortstop Johnny Whittleman making the pick up and toss to Junior second baseman Josh Fountain on the turn to Junior first baseman Austin Wood.  Wood also contributed a diving stop down the first base line where he knocked down a ground ball, picked it up and beat a racing Bruin runner to first base to record the final out of the 5th inning.

In the 6th inning following Jordan’s entrance with runners on first and second with 1 out, Junior left-fielder Kenneth Negron ran down and caught a line drive in the left centerfield gap and doubled the surprised Beaumont runner off of second base with a good throw.  The Bruin scoring threat in the top of the 7th inning was quickly erased as Senior third baseman Greg Gossett charged a slowly hit ground ball, fielded the ball and threw to Fountain, who completed the turn and throw on a 5-4-3 double play to Wood.
