District 22-5A Game 6 Summary

Kingwood at Port Arthur Memorial

On March 30, 2004, the Mustangs traveled to Port Arthur to play the Port Arthur Memorial Titans in game six of District 22-5A play.

Kingwood wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Mustang lead off hitter Senior Greg Gossett opened the game with a walk.  Gossett moved to second on a hit and run and scored on a double to left field by Junior shortstop Johnny Whittleman.  Following Whittleman’s double, Junior catcher John Seitz in the clean up spot delivered a single to left center field that scored Whittleman.  Senior outfielder Steffen Savarino came into the game as a courtesy runner for Seitz.  Senior designated hitter Ryan Mize singled and Junior first baseman Austin Wood walked to load the bases.  Sophomore right fielder Doug Simmons then delivered a two RBI single up the middle that scored Savarino and Mize.

Wood would score on a ground ball hit by Junior centerfielder Kyle Denney.   Lead off hitter Gossett, batting for his second time in the inning, ended the scoring for the Mustangs by singling to center field, which drove in both Simmons and Denney.  Score after ½ innings, Kingwood 7 - Port Arthur 0.

Senior right hander Daniel Edwards took the mound for the Mustangs in the bottom of the 1st inning.  Edwards pitched four innings and gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run.   Edwards earned his third district victory and fourth victory overall.  The Titans scored the first run that Edwards has given up in district play.   His two previous outings were shutouts earned against these same Titans and against Humble.

Junior catcher John Seitz capably handled the duties behind the plate and threw out a Titan trying to steal his way into scoring position in the 3rd inning.

Kingwood provided the runs necessary to end the game under the 10 run lead mercy rule in the 3rd inning (after 5 innings).

Wood led off with a single to left field, which was followed by a Simmon’s single to left field.  Junior second baseman Josh Fountain then double down the right field line scoring Wood.  Denney followed Fountain with a base hit up the middle to score Simmons.  Fountain was thrown out at the plate attempting to score.  Denny advanced to second base on the throw to the plate.  On a 3-0 pitch, Gossett hit a line drive past the left fielder into the left field corner for a stand up triple driving in Denney.  Gossett scored on a fielder’s choice by Junior centerfielder Kenneth Negron.  The Titan’s 2nd baseman tried to throw Gossett out at the plate after fielding Negron’s ground ball.  Gossett slide in past the tag touching the plate with his hand and making the score after 2 ½ innings Kingwood 11 - Port Arthur 0

The Titans scored their lone run in the bottom of the 4th making the score Kingwood 11 and Port Arthur 1.

Gossett led off the Mustang 5th inning with a line drive double.  Negron walked and Whittleman drove in Gossett with his second double of the game, this one to right field.  With Whittleman on second base and Negron on third base, clean up hitter Seitz closed out the scoring with a two RBI single.  The score after 4 ½ innings was Mustangs 14 - Titans 1.
