Kingwood District Lead Reduced to One Game

On April 20, 2004, the Kingwood Mustangs visited the Humble Wildcats to play game 12 of district play and the second of three games the two teams play in district competition.

Senior right-hander Daniel Edwards, 5-0 in district play and 6-1 overall, got the start for the Mustangs and pitched nine innings giving up 7 hits and  2 earned runs with 8 strikeouts in this competitive 11 inning thriller.

Senior right-hander Jimmy Jordan pitched the 10th inning giving up one run on two hits following a light failure at the Humble Stadium that caused a 35 minute delay with the Mustangs ahead 3-2.

Blake Hancock pitched the 11th inning and gave up one run on one hit.

Defensively, Junior leftfielder Kenneth Negron made two excellent catches – the first being in the first inning on the lead off batter. Negron ran down and caught a fly ball deep in the leftfield corner.  Negron also made an outstanding catch in the left centerfield gap to record the first out of the 4th inning.

Senior catcher Andrew Brooks handled two difficult foul pop ups in the 1st inning to record the 3rd out of the inning and in the 3rd inning to record the 2nd out.

Edwards helped himself with a nice stop up the middle and 1-3 throw out in the 7th inning.

Junior first baseman Austin Wood made a good play on a Texas leaguer hit over first base, catching it on the run in the 8th inning to record the 3rd out of that frame.

Kingwood would score in the 4th inning on a walk to Negron followed by a mishandled Brooks’ bunt that left both runners safe on first and third bases.  A base hit up the middle brought Negron home and sent Bruce Williams (running for Brooks) to third base.  Williams scored on a balk by the Humble pitcher.  Kingwood was up after 3 ½ - Mustangs 2 – Wildcats 0.

Humble tied the game in the bottom of the 5th inning with 2 runs on 4 hits. With one out in the top of the 10th inning, Junior shortstop Johnny Whittleman put the Mustangs on top 3-2 with a line drive homerun over the centerfield fence prior to the power outage.  Score after 9 ½ innings – Kingwood 3 – Humble 2.

Following the 35 minute game delay due to the lights going out, Humble scored in the bottom of the 10th inning and scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Offensively for Kingwood:

Whittleman            1-4, homerun, 1 run – 1 RBI – on base 2-5 (walk)
