Kingwood Wins Tenth Straight

Edwards/Jordan Shut Out Humble 6-0

Senior Daniel Edwards took the mound for the Mustangs Tuesday night, March 23, 2004, at home versus Humble.  Edwards went six innings, gave up 3 hits, no runs, struck out 9 batters, and notched his third victory for the year.  Senior Jimmy Jordan came in the 7th inning to close out the game.

Defensively, Edwards received good support from Junior first baseman Austin Wood, who made a nice catch on a pop foul near the Humble dugout in the first inning and made a tough  play on a ground ball that he handled unassisted to close out the 2nd inning.

Edwards helped himself by starting a 1-6-3 double play in the 4th inning with Junior shortstop Johnny Whittleman on the turn at second base throwing to Wood at first base.  Junior Kyle Denney made a warning track catch with two runners aboard in the 6th inning, which proved to be a very big out.

Jordan came in to close out the game in the 7th inning and struck out one batter. Mustang Senior third baseman Greg Gossett charged a slowly hit ground ball and threw out the final Wildcat runner in the 7th inning.

Offensively, Kingwood got the runs Edwards and Jordan would need in the 1st inning.

Lead off batter, Gossett, reached first base on a slow roller; moved to second base on a well hit single to centerfield by Junior leftfielder Kenneth Negron; and stole third base and scored on a wild pitch making the score 1-0.  Negron advanced to second base on the wild pitch. Whittleman walked. Sophomore right fielder Doug Simmons hit into a fielder’s choice, which retired Negron. With 2 outs, Senior catcher Andrew Brooks delivered a clutch 2 RBI single to right centerfield scoring Whittleman and Simmons.  The score after one full inning was Mustangs 3 and Humble 0.  Kingwood would score again in the 2nd inning.   Wood reached first base; advanced to second base on a hit and run out by Junior second baseman Josh Fountain; and scored on a double laced into the right field corner by Denney.

Kingwood closed out the scoring in the 6th inning.   Cleanup hitter Simmons belted a solo homer over the right field fence to open the inning.  Following Simmons’ homerun, Senior designated hitter Ryan Mize was hit by a pitch, advanced on a single by Wood, and scored on a RBI single by Fountain, making the final score Kingwood 6 and Humble 0.
