Pete Runnels Texas Shootout 2004

 Kingwood Mustangs vs. Canyon Creek

The Mustangs made their annual trip to Lufkin for the Pete Runnel’s Shootout, which honors the former Major League Baseball All-Star and Lufkin native, Pete Runnels.  Kingwood wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in their initial contest on March 11, 2004, versus Canyon Creek.

Lead off hitter Senior third baseman Greg Gossett hit a line drive single to right center field and promptly stole second base and third base on 2 pitches.  Two hole hitter Junior second baseman Josh Fountain walked and stole second base, putting Mustang runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Junior shortstop Johnny Whittleman then hit a sacrifice fly, which scored Gossett from third base.  Sophomore clean up hitter Doug Simmons delivered a right center field gap double that scored Fountain and put the Mustangs up 2-0.  Simmons scored on a base hit by Junior leftfielder A.J. Pendleton to close out the scoring in the visitors half of the first inning at 3-0.

That would be all Senior pitcher Daniel Edwards would need as he pitched a perfect 3 innings 9 up and 9 down with 6 strike outs to get the win.  Pendleton would move from left field to pitcher for the final two frames (5 innings due to the 10 run rule).  He would also be perfect going 6 up and 6 down to complete the perfect game for Kingwood.   Pendleton was aided by a nice play in the hole by shortstop Greg Gossett that ended the 5th inning.  Final score Kingwood 16 – Canyon Creek 0

Offensively, Kingwood was led by Fountain who was 3-4 with a double, a walk, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI’s and 2 stolen bases.
