Kingwood Run Rules Baytown Lee

In 4 ˝ Innings

The Kingwood Mustangs won their 13th game in their 14th District 22-5A outing Thursday night against the Baytown Lee Ganders.

Kingwood at home against the Baytown 9 would start Junior lefthander, Blake Hancock, on the hill.  Hancock pitched three shutout, no hit innings to earn the victory.  Sophomore righthander, Ryan Torres, came on to pitch in the 4th inning and like Hancock, would no run no hit the Ganders.  Junior lefthander, Austin Wood, closed out this abbreviated game (due to the 10 run rule) in the top of the 5th inning, completing the shutout and no hitter for Kingwood.

With only one ball hit out of the infield, Kingwood’s stellar infield of Gossett, Whittleman, Fountain, and Wood made short work of any ground balls hit by Baytown.  Catcher, Andrew Brooks, continued to handle the Mustang pitching staff capably.

Offensively for Kingwood:

Gossett        2-2, 2B-HR, on base 3-3, (HBP) 3 runs –  3 RBI’s – 2 stolen

                               bases

Kingwood Senior Class of 2004

The Kingwood Senior Class of 2004 made their final scheduled appearance at home at Andy Wells field in this game.  The Kingwood Class of 2004’s chemistry, heart, and leadership brought Kingwood one of the finer District seasons in recent memory and will hopefully lead to a state title.

Whatever happens from today, the Senior Class of 2004 will be remembered as champions on and off the field.  We salute our Seniors wish them much success as they graduate and pursue their dreams.

Jonathan “Iceman” Beatty (Right-handed Pitcher) Pitched three clutch innings of shutout relief against then No. 1 Tomball in Minute Maid Park to earn the victory and hand Tomball their only loss of the season.  When he comes on to close, you can almost write 3 up 3 down in the book.

Renato Bringas (Catcher / outfielder) Injured entire 2004 season.  A big time right-handed hitter. Could be back during the playoffs to give the Mustangs another weapon.

Andrew “Brooksie” Brooks (Catcher) Batting .400+ for the Mustangs. Clutch 3 run double verses Humble in district title game.  Must be batting .600 when Kingwood needs a hit.  A lot of talk, but nobody runs on him.  Defensively, Brooks is an outstanding receiver, the toughest breaking pitches don’t get past this “wall”.

Daniel “D” Edwards (Right-handed Pitcher)  5-0 in 2004 district play, 6-1 overall – only loss came in game where he went 7 innings, gave up 1 earned run, lost 2-1 in first game of season.  He has begun to hit for himself in games – pitches his heart out every time he steps on the field, ERA of less than 1.5.

Greg Gossett (Infielder)  Can play anywhere – after hot start sees little to hit – leads Mustangs in 22-5A district in many offensive categories including RBI’s – from the lead off spot - unselfish – winner.  Middle infielder entire life, switched to third in senior season to help team.  If he’s at the plate when the game is on the line the opposition needs to dial 911 – ask Humble.

Jimmy Jordan (Right-handed Pitcher - Infielder – Outfielder – Competitor) – How does Kingwood spell relief J-O-R-D-A-N.  Every time the game is on the line and David Denny goes to his right arm you can bet that Jimmy Jordan will come out of the bullpen.  Threw 5 2/3 innings to beat Lee in 4-3 close important district game early on.  Shut down Humble 3 up 3 down in 7th inning at Kingwood for save and district title.  Pinch running stole home at Sterling in extra inning game to win district game that lead to 2003 title.  Whatever it takes kind of guy.

Ryan Mize (DH/1B) – left-handed hitter who can fly – power to all fields make a mistake pitching to him and he will dent your score board.   Ryan is a team player and important part of the team’s chemistry.

Steffen Savarino (Outfielder) An outstanding defensive outfielder and a real offensive threat.  2 sport standout – WR in football & outfielder in baseball. Overcame injuries to be an integral part of the team.  Savarino has come through for the Mustangs in each role he has been asked to play.  Two double, 2 run, 4 RBI game verses Sterling was huge for Kingwood.  His speed is a weapon for the Mustangs.  Savarino has shown leadership and character – a true team player.

Zack “Attack” Tumlinson (Left-handed Pitcher) The fire burns hot in this one – 160 lbs. – whose heart must weigh 100 lbs. – undefeated in district play – 6-1 overall – only loss coming in a well pitched game in Minute Maid Park against highly regarded Katy Tigers.  Complements other staff pitchers well – will double up with an inning of relief to close for other pitchers.  ERA of less than 1.5.  Not even David Denny wants to go to the mound to take the ball from this one.
