Knowing what they had to do with District leading
Dobie coming to town Saturday, the Kingwood Sophomores rallied late for a 6 -
2 victory to keep their title hopes alive. The Longhorns struck first
with one run in the top of the first off starter Blake Steil. They
tallied a second run in the top of the 4th and held a 2 - 0 lead after 4 1/2
innings before the Mustangs struck back in the bottom of the 5th. With
one out in the 5th, Kyle Denney reached on a Dobie error. Jake Kolesar
then walked. Austin Pendleton singled to bring home the first run of the
inning. Thomas McCormick then walked to load the bases. Kenneth
Negron walked to bring in the second run and the Josh Fountain laid down a
squeeze bunt to get the third run across. Austin Wood then doubled to
drive home runs four and five to give Kingwood a 5 - 2 lead after 5 full
innings. Kingwood scored an insurance run in the 6th when Denney led off
the inning reaching on an error. Blake Hancock was then hit by a pitch
and both runners moved over on a Brian Jeanes sac bunt. Michael
Cvejanovich walked to load the bases and Denney scored on a wild pitch.
Austin Pendleton was 2/2, 1 run. Blake Steil 1/3, Austin Wood 1/3.
Kyle Denney scored twice and Kenneth Negron, Michael Cvejanovich and Jake
Kolesar once apiece. Starter Blake Steil went 5 innings, allowed 5 hits,
walked 2 and struck out 4. Blake Hancock preserved the lead the final
two innings allowing 2 hits while striking out 2.
