JV Stangs play District games #5 and #6

The Kingwood junior varsity baseball team is now half way through their 2002 district season after playing games 5 and 6 this past week.  The Mustangs record stands at 5-1. In the next half of the season Kingwood will play the same district teams again allowing the Mustangs the opportunity to even the score against the Humble Wildcats, the only team the JV’s have lost to this season.

The JV’s traveled to two away games this past week.  First they played South Houston, where Daniel Edwards, the Mustangs’ starting pitcher, kept the opposition to only three hits and led the team to a 6-4 victory. The Mustangs’ offense was very consistent, scoring in every inning but the fourth.  Andrew Brooks got Kingwood on the scoreboard in the first inning by hitting in the lead-off batter who reached base on an error.  Edwards finished off the inning pitching to only three South Houston batters.  In the second inning Johnny Whittleman led off with a single and after a few pitches was able to advance to third.  Kyle Edge, hitting into a field’s choice, was able to score the run from third. Kingwood continued the threat when Matt Grundy singled and later reached third, but didn’t score. South Houston answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run homerun. With the score tied at two and no outs, Edwards came back striking out the next two batters and got the third to ground out to second base.  Kingwood took the lead again in the top of the third when John Sietz hit a RBI double to the left field gap. In the bottom of the third,   South Houston led off with a grounder down the third base line.  From the deep corner of left field, Tyler Wood ended the South Houston runner’s hope to stretch his hit into a double, with a long throw to second base for out number one.  Both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Kingwood’s John Sietz got his second RBI by hitting in Casey Stoub who had singled and stole his way to third base. In the bottom of the fifth, South Houston came back to tie the score at four with two runs on one hit.  In the top of the last inning the Mustangs quickly got two base runners with walks. The first scored after Tyler Wood hit a ground ball to the second baseman, and the second runner scored from third when Kingwood got into an intentional run down.  Going into the bottom of the last inning, Kingwood was ahead by two runs and Edwards faced one batter before being relieved by Jonathan Beaty.  Utilizing one of Kingwood’s favorite plays, Beaty was successful at picking off South Houston’s lead runner at second.  Two batters later the Mustangs ended the inning and game with a 6-4 victory.

The Mustangs’ second game last week was against Dobie. Kingwood’s Renato Bringas allowed only three hits after pitching all seven innings of this 7-1 Mustang victory. The first inning went quickly with three-up three-down for both sides.  Kingwood scored first in the second inning after three walks and a 2 RBI single by Robert Hayes.  In the bottom of the second inning, Dobie scored their only run of the night on one hit.  Both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Kingwood scored two runs after a base on error, a single by Matt Grundy, Ryan Williams’ second hit of the night, an intentional run down and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Wood.  Kingwood threatened but didn’t score in the sixth inning, after Casey Stoub singled and stole his way to third.  Kingwood put the final touches on the game when Kyle Edge, Andrew Brooks and Renato Bringas all got RBI singles.
